Allen Signs selects Applelec’s illuminated built up letters for PARKLIFE festival.
Manchester’s biggest music festival blends music from dance, electronic, pop, rock, grime, hip hop and more. This two-day event attracts around 70,000 visitors per day and has developed a reputation for its diverse line up, attracting some of the biggest music stars from across the globe.
Allen Signs were appointed to supply the logo for the PARKLIFE stage and tasked the Applelec Signage team to bring their concept to life.
Requirements for the project included large face illuminated letters at 1200mm high and 100mm deep. These letters would be mounted, at a height, to the curved frame at the top of the stage and as such the letters needed to follow this curve, whilst upholding safety at all times. Alongside this, the illumination within the letters needed to sync to the music, creating a vibrant feature of their logo.
Due to the height of the sign, rim and return letters were selected with 5mm acrylic faces and a 20mm rim around each letter. This provides the larger than average letters more support and stability to the acrylic faces, which is a crucial safety consideration when installed at a height.
A 40mm deep built up back tray was then fabricated, and letters mounted to it, offering a solid and robust foundation to add the letters to in the desired curved layout, whilst simplifying installation to the existing frame.
Returns were coated in standard RAL black, with white, semi-gloss coating to the inside of each letter to enhance the chosen illumination even further. A digitally printed vinyl was then applied to the letters acrylic face.
SloanLED Spectrum RGBW LED modules were selected for the face illumination, offering powerful and efficient lighting in a wide range of colours and the brightest whites not often possible with a basic RGB module.
Finally, to meet the required project specification, LTECH DMX controllers were then connected to the LED modules and programmed so that the LEDs full spectrum of colours changed to the beat of the music. This created a striking and animated logo, bringing the brand logo to life whilst perfectly matching the atmosphere of this dynamic event.
